Wandering in Beirut!

2013 a whole brand New Year! Taking advantage of the long weekend on the occasion of The Prophet's Birthday I booked myself for a Group Travel to Lebanon, a country full of history and many civilizations. The Phoenicians were here and the Romans too. Earliest civilization dates more than 7000 years back!

So from Dubai, I flew into Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Before the war and the destruction, Beirut was known as the Paris of the Middle East.....and I would say very rightly so. With it's French influence architecture, world class cuisine, and its fashionable women and it's old ties to France, it fits the shoe.

Here are some photos from my walk around the capital...the day we all landed in the city all the way from Dubai.

Lebanese Parliament

Around Parliament

The Mosque

Parliament Square....and of course army walking around not uncommon!

The Roman Baths of Berytus located in the middle of downtown Beirut surrounded by government buildings were found and preserved for posterity. So we can see the ancient mixed with modernity sitting side by side.

Another popular tourist destination is the Raouche neighbourhood where one can sit in any one of its numerous restaurants or cliff side cafes that line Avenue De Paris and gaze at the iconic rock formations called the Raouche Rocks or The Pigeons Rocks.

Little Kids distributing free sweets in the streets! They were yummy and so beautifully wrapped!

Inside Beirut Mall

Excavation goes on under the mall!

The cobbled path with all the haute couture shops!

Picture of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005.

 The busy Corniche Road

The Beirut Corniche is popular both with the locals and tourists alike. Lined with palm trees the waterfront has views of the Mediterranean and the summits of Mount Lebanon to the east.

Of course with all the walking around we were hungry and went to La Paillote, a seafood restaurant to fill our stomachs with some good food!

This scooter had a roof!

Night view of the Raouche Rocks from the Bay Rock Hotel where we had our dinner.

My dinner......a sumptuous plate of "Fish & Chips" and Friend Onion Rings!
